027 : Spencer McGarry Season

There are two babies in the Ivy League studio this afternoon. One of them, in an entirely literal sense, is actually a baby; a sweet, well behaved little girl along for the ride with the band, sitting in and looking on with wonder as her mum makes music.

Some of our usual studio duties get forgotten as we take on the job of babysitting, not that we mind, we like kids here at the Ivy League – we’re a family friendly operation.
In another sense, the incarnation of the Spencer McGarry Season that joins us in the studio is very much in it's infancy, albeit in a much more metaphorical sense.

Spencer has been known for some years now for his hook-laden take on indie-pop music but very recently the guitar based set-up of the Spencer McGarry Season has been expanded into what can only be described as a mini-orchestra. Into our studio this afternoon Spencer brings a violin, a cello, percussion, guitars, horns and a flute. The sound of the new band is something very exciting, taking Spencer’s ear for a great melody and creating indie music filled out with a pop-baroque orchestration reminiscing of a 1950s Disney film. And it works, very well.

It’s safe to say that this metaphorical, musical baby has got a bright future. And, from the smile on her face, it’s clear that our young guest for the afternoon agrees.
